  • AMC 8 Summary

This is a quick summary to start off your morning. Yesterday’s AMC-8 contest at Bard College went exceptionally well. We had 48 middle school students from around the area take the national AMC-8 exam, representing almost 20 different schools. The contest was followed by a wonderful math talk by Jim Belk and Maria Belk on…

  • AMC-8 Schools at Bard

The AMC-8 exam is tomorrow, and our event has grown even beyond what we were expecting! A few weeks ago we had to start a waiting list, but then ordered more test packets to increase our capacity. So, no more waiting list! We will be able to accommodate last-minute arrivals, so please encourage your friends (and…

  • Math Scene Investigation : Hudson Valley

‎”In the mathematics outreach system, bland teaching offenses are considered especially heinous. In the Hudson Valley, the dedicated instructors who investigate these vicious felonies are members of a elite squad known as the Bard Math Circle. These are their stories.”http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-8lDYrvTILc

  • Are you motivated by your test scores?

In preparation for the AMC-8 exam coming up on November 13th, I took a look at the statistics from last year’s contest. One thing that is striking is that, although this contest attracts some of the highest achieving middle school students in the country, the average score on the exam is less than 40%. That’s right –…

  • USA Mathematical Talent Search

This year’s problems for the USA Mathematical Talent Search are available, and the round 1 problems are due on October 22, 2012. This contest is interesting in that students send in full explanations, rather than just the numerical answers. Good luck to any Bard Math Circle students who compete!

Japheth Wood

I’m Japheth Wood (he/him), the Bard Math CAMP co-director, and a math professor at Bard College. CAMP (which is an acronym for Creative and Analytical Math Program) is a very special week of the year for our young math community. It's inspiring to see our students return year after year. This is our 11th summer of CAMP! We're back once again on the idyllic Bard College campus in Annandale-on-Hudson, and thankful to the CAMP students, parents, and staff, for making this mathemagical week happen. Notably, we've (finally) had our first CAMP reunion this past June, an event that I know will grow to be an integral part of what we do.

Frances Stern

My name is Frances Stern (she/her/hers)! I’ve been teaching math at CAMP since the first year, making sure our math theme has a connection to art and computer. It’s fun to show students math that they don’t see in school. I've retired from daily teaching but continue to teach for the New York Math Circle & students who are seeking more math in their lives. My hobbies include learning to draw, paint, & juggle, reading, walking & folk dancing. I’ve written 2 books for teachers and parents called “Adding Math, Subtracting Tension” (for different age-ranges of children). They pay as much attention to how to keep out of a fight (what many parents told me is a problem) as they do to math.
