CAMP 2025 Staff

Please meet our amazing team!

Japheth Wood
Math Instructor, Co-director
I’m Japheth Wood (he/him), the Bard Math CAMP co-director, and a math professor at Bard College. CAMP (which stands for Creative and Analytical Math Program) is one of my favorite weeks each year. I can’t believe that CAMP is already in its 12th summer! I’m very excited for the mathematical topics we’ll uncover this year, grateful for the opportunity to work with the amazing CAMP staff, and I can’t wait to learn from our 2025 CAMP students.
Frances Stern
Math Instructor, Co-director

My name is Frances Stern (she/her/hers)! I’ve been teaching math at CAMP since the first year, naking sure our math theme has a connection to art and computer. It’s fun to show students math that they don’t see in school. I’ve retired from daily teaching but continue to teach for the New York Math Circle & students who are seeking more math in their lives. My hobbies include learning to draw, paint, & juggle, reading, walking & folk dancing. I’ve written 2 books for teachers and parents called “Adding Math, Subtracting Tension” (for different age-ranges of children). They pay as much attention to how to keep out of a fight (what many parents told me is a problem) as they do to math.

Yulia Genkina
CS Instructor

My name is Yulia Genkina, any pronouns work. I’m really excited to be teaching Computer Science at CAMP this year. In the past, I worked as a math and computer science educator, theater technician, and musician. Bringing art, hands-on problem-solving and exact sciences together is one of my favorite approaches to education. I can’t wait to share it with all of you this summer! For the past few years I have been working as an educator in the Tech industry, creating training and learning experiences for software engineers. Bard is my alma mater and C.A.M.P. has been keeping me connected to it for the past several years. It reminds me and emphasizes how Bard really is “a place to think”. In my free time, I like rock-climbing, volunteering for the circus, making crafts, and dancing.

Shoshi Cohen
Art Instructor
Hi!! I’m Shoshi, a senior at Skidmore College, where I’m majoring in Art History and English. I’ve been participating in Bard Math activities for years, including Bard Math Circle and Bard Math CAMP when I was a camper myself. This year will be my sixth year working at CAMP, and I am excited for this year’s session of CAMP! I’ve always had a passion for creativity, and I enjoy finding new and innovative ways to bridge math and art every summer. I’m delighted to be the Art Instructor for the fourth year in a row, and I’m looking forward to what CAMP 2025 will bring.
Lin Khant
CAMP Coordinator
My name, Lin, translates to “light” in my native Burmese language. I was born in Burma and am a rising senior in the global and international studies program with a secondary focus in anthropology. I only received a passing score of 40 marks in my high school math final exam because I struggle with math. Still, I would like to communicate with individuals who are experts in the subject and cherish math as a way of life. Personally, I am an amateur anthropologist and like to coordinate programs in social impact projects. I have led over 5 different projects in the past with different timelines and am currently leading allyours.ngo in Burma while doing my senior project on healing anime and manga.
Sabine Harvey
CAMP Blogger
My name is Sabine Harvey (she/her) and I’m a rising high school junior from Kingston. In my free time I enjoy running, singing, and listening to music. I plan to study STEM in college and aspire to have a career in neuroscience. Math has been a subject I have enjoyed for its aspect of solving puzzles and always being able to find an answer. I attended CAMP in 2021 and, despite being online, greatly enjoyed all the games and learning opportunities. I am very excited to join the staff this year and am looking forward to this amazing experience and getting to meet everyone!
Ariella Cohen
Art TA
My name is Ariella Cohen (she/her), and I will be a senior in high school this coming school year. I have attended many Bard Math Circles in the past and have always enjoyed playing math games and solving problems there. I was a high school volunteer at CAMP last year, and I will be helping out with the art classes this year. I am excited to work with the campers and teach them all sorts of art and origami! I have many hobbies including origami, sewing, and creating music and art, and I am looking forward to my second year at CAMP.
Shiven Dabhi
CS TA

My name is Shiven Dabhi (he/him) and I’m a rising high school senior from Wappingers Falls. This will be my third year as a part of CAMP staff, and I’m excited to be returning as a TA this year. I’ve been involved with the Bard Math Circle for the past 6 years with various math contests and as a former CAMPer. At CAMP, I enjoyed being able to learn about complex topics and work on them in an interdisciplinary manner. I look forward to furthering this unique learning approach as a part of staff this year. In my free time this past year, I researched electric drone propulsion technology that has no moving parts and ran a nonprofit that empowers youth to pursue their goals in STEM. I’ve always been fascinated by the way things work and seeing how different types of technology can come together to form a cohesive idea. Some of my other hobbies are cinematography, photography, coding, tennis, music, and 3D animation. I can’t wait to meet everyone at CAMP this summer!

Gemma Rothschild
Math TA

My name is Gemma Rothschild (she/her) and I am a rising high school junior in NYC. I attended CAMP for many years as a student, and was a high school volunteer last year.  Some of my hobbies are tennis and playing tabla. I also work with 4th and 5th grade students to prepare for math competitions and began a math puzzle magazine for lower schoolers at my school. I am so excited to learn and teach more at CAMP this summer!

Maya Schwartz
Math TA
My name is Maya Schwartz and I graduated from Bard in May 2019! I majored in mathematics and was the program coordinator of CAMP 2017 and 2018. I am currently a doctoral student at Teachers College, Columbia University and I teach middle and high school math. I currently live in New York City and I am a stair climber in my free time. This means that I race up skyscrapers for fun. I have raced up the Empire State Building (1,576 steps in 26:45), the Willis tower in Chicago (2,109 steps in 36:53), Summit One Vanderbilt (3,291 steps in 25:12), and One World Trade Center (2,226 steps in 32:51). Future goals are currently Eiffel Tower (1,665 steps) and Taipei 101 (2,046 steps).
Makayla Robinson
HS Volunteer
My name is Makayla Robinson (she/her), and this fall I will be a junior at Rhinebeck High School. I attended CAMP in 2021 and 2022; during that time, I enjoyed learning new things and playing different math games. My hobbies include playing soccer, rowing crew, and spending time with my dog. I also adore traveling with my family and learning about different cultures along the way. Some of my favorite locations I have visited are Hawaii, Tuscany, Paris, and Amsterdam. The place I wish to travel next is Jamaica, where a large portion of my family lives. I am excited to work with everybody in my first year acting as a high school volunteer.
Julia Roy
HS Volunteer
My name is Julia (Lia) Roy, I live on the West Coast and I’ll be a sophomore this coming year. Math Circles have been a part of my life since 3rd grade! I first attended Bard Math CAMP during COVID when it was online and thought it had a unique approach by including art and computer science with math. I was lucky enough to attend two more Bard Math CAMPs in-person while visiting family on the East Coast. My main hobbies are math, puzzles, writing and drawing, and I spend some of my free time involved in a mother-daughter volunteer organization. I am also doing cross country as well as robotics. I have been a counselor at a robotics summer camp for grades 4-6 for a couple years. This will be my first time volunteering as a CAMP counselor, and I’m really excited to be helping out this year!
Peter Duperon
HS Volunteer
My name is Peter and I am a rising sophomore in high school from Pennsylvania. I am homeschooled and the oldest of five children. I attended CAMP in 2022 and I enjoyed it and am excited to return as a volunteer this year. Some of my favorite math things are solving math puzzles and number theory topics like finding patterns and modular arithmetic. Outside of math, I enjoy playing video games, especially early Final Fantasy games, hiking, reading, and playing Magic: The Gathering. One of my goals this year was to hike one hundred miles on Pennsylvania trails by September 1st and I am very close with less than ten miles remaining.

Japheth Wood

I’m Japheth Wood (he/him), the Bard Math CAMP co-director, and a math professor at Bard College. CAMP (which is an acronym for Creative and Analytical Math Program) is a very special week of the year for our young math community. It's inspiring to see our students return year after year. This is our 11th summer of CAMP! We're back once again on the idyllic Bard College campus in Annandale-on-Hudson, and thankful to the CAMP students, parents, and staff, for making this mathemagical week happen. Notably, we've (finally) had our first CAMP reunion this past June, an event that I know will grow to be an integral part of what we do.
