CAMP 2022 Staff

I’m Japheth Wood (he/him), the CAMP director, and a math professor at Bard College. CAMP is a very special week of the year for our young math community. It's inspiring to see students return year after year, and I know we're doing the right thing, when CAMP alumni are excited to join us on staff. This summer, CAMP has returned to in-person. Although I'm sad that many of our friends from around the country and world won't be able to join us, I'm thrilled that we're back to the idyllic Bard College campus in Annandale-on-Hudson. I'm thankful to the CAMP students, parents, and staff, for making this mathemagical week happen. And of course, I'm honored by the recognition of the American Mathematical Society through our third Epsilon Award, as well as the early support of the Dolciani Math Enrichment Program, administered by the Mathematical Association of America.

My name is Frances Stern (she/her/hers)! I’ve been teaching math at CAMP since the first year, sometimes choosing the program’s math theme. It’s fun to show students math that they don’t see in school. I've just retired from teaching math part-time at a private school in New York City. My hobbies include learning to paint & juggle, reading, walking & folk dancing. I’ve written 2 books for teachers and parents called “Adding Math, Subtracting Tension” (for 2 different age ranges of children). They pay as much attention to how to keep out of a fight (what many parents told me is a problem) as they do to math.

My name is Yulia Genkina, any pronouns work. I’m really excited to be teaching Computer Science at CAMP this year. In the past, I worked as a math and computer science educator, theater technician, and musician. Bringing art, hands-on problem-solving and exact sciences together is one of my favorite approaches to education. I can’t wait to share it with all of you this summer! For the past few years I have been working as an educator in the Tech industry, creating training and learning experiences for software engineers. Bard is my alma mater and C.A.M.P. has been keeping me connected to it for the past several years. It reminds me and emphasizes how Bard really is “a place to think”. In my free time, I like rock-climbing, volunteering for the circus, doing sew work, and dancing.

I’m Anish (he/him), a rising High School junior in Upstate New York. I am very excited to be part of CAMP for the 2nd year in a row and have been involved with the Bard Math Circle since taking the AMC 8 in 6th grade. Since then, I have participated in several other exams (AMC 10, Purple Comet) and been a camper at CAMP. My hobbies include playing tennis, chess, and programming. I’m the president of my High School’s robotics team & this year; I will be teaching Computer Science at CAMP.

My name is Shoshi and I just graduated from high school; I plan on attending Skidmore College in the fall! I have been participating in Bard Math activities for quite a few years now, including Bard Math Circle and Bard Math CAMP as a camper. Last year I decided to revisit the fun I had in attending these events by working as a counselor for Bard Math CAMP, and I am returning this year with the same motive! I am so excited for this year's CAMP endeavors, and I know it will be a splendid week of fun! 

My name is Julianne and this is my first year volunteering at CAMP. I just graduated from Kingston High School. Some of my after school activities included lacrosse, peer tutoring, Science Olympiad, and Math Team. In the fall, I will be going to Pomona College (where I’ll be studying math and playing lacrosse!). I participated at Bard Math Circle at the Kingston Library and I can’t wait to teach and learn more math at CAMP!

I'm looking forward to my first year as a junior staff member and blogger for Bard Math CAMP.  A member of the MIT Girls’ Angle math club since I was 10, one of my math quests was to find the optimal size and design of an intergalactic cat carrier.  I also play the piano and flute.  In one of my favorite “eureka!” moments, I found a way to turn the chromatic scale into a musical space donut.  But my favorite project so far – which I published in the Girls’ Angle Bulletin with my friends – was determining the probability of slippage when throwing bananas at Mathematical Gorilla Knights.  When I’m not dreaming up math stories, I can be found feeding insects to my carnivorous plant, trying to read the inscriptions on my favorite Mayan monuments, and raiding Little Free Libraries.

I'm Shiven Dabhi (he/him), and I am a rising sophomore from Wappingers Falls, New York. I am looking forward to my first year volunteering at CAMP, after being involved in other activities in the Bard Math Circle like the AMC8, AMC10, and Purple Comet. Some of my hobbies outside of math and science are tennis, playing the piano and flute, and ping pong (or table tennis; whatever you want to call it), and reading fiction novels. Besides that, I like keeping up with many new and emerging technologies in the field of science. This past year, I was a part of my high school's Math Team, Science Olympiad, and Jazz Ensemble. I also love tackling challenges and solving problems in math, and I am really exited to do more of that this summer at CAMP!

I’m Alexi Safford, and will be working with the camp staff this summer for a few weeks. I am a former member of this camp, and I’m coming back to volunteer because of how much I loved it. This camp features the absolute most fun I have ever had doing math, with exotic subjects that (in most cases) I had not even heard of.
