I’m Japheth Wood (he/him/his) the CAMP director, and a math professor at Bard College. I enjoy sharing interesting and challenging math with my students at all levels. I’m excited that we’ve reached our sixth summer of CAMP, and would like your help in imagining how can we grow and expand this Creative and Analytical Math Program to have an even bigger impact. I live in Kingston with my family, and enjoy riding my bike, juggling, and walking around town.

My name is Felicia Flores and I use the pronouns she/her/hers. I am your 2019 Bard Math Circle Summer CAMP Coordinator! As a rising sophomore at Bard College, I double major in Mathematics and Studio Arts. I decided to be a part of this program because of my passion for helping motivated children dive into their interests in order to give them the best chance to attain a future that they can be proud of. In addition, I absolutely love mathematics and get so excited by a student that can appreciate the subject as well. For fun, I play on Bard’s Women’s Varsity Soccer Team and also organize pick-up games with other members of the Bard Community! I also am the TLS Head for the Bard Math Circle and for Girls Math Club, another program that – just like CAMP – is part of the Bard Math Circle.

My name is Frances Stern (she/her/hers)! I’ve been teaching math at CAMP since the first year, sometimes choosing the program’s math theme. It’s fun to show students math that they don’t see in school. During the school year, I teach math part-time at a private school in New York City. My hobbies include learning to paint & juggle, reading, walking & folk dancing. I’ve written 2 books for teachers and parents called “Adding Math, Subtracting Tension” (for 2 different age ranges of children). They pay as much attention to how to keep out of a fight (what many parents told me is a problem) as they do to math.

My name is Matt Hughes (he/him/his), and I work as a software developer at edX in Boston. I graduated from Bard College in 2013 as a Math Major, and went on to continue my studies at Georgia Institute of Technology for a degree in Computer Science. I’ve taught various subjects including sight-singing, algebra, and a brief stint on basic technological literacy. I’m excited to expand my teaching experience in computer science at CAMP!

My name is Yulia Genkina, any pronouns work. I’m really excited to be teaching Computer Science at CAMP this year. In the past, I worked as a math and computer science educator, theater technician, and musician. Bringing art, hands-on problem-solving and exact sciences together is one of my favorite approaches to education. I can’t wait to share it with all of you this summer! Presently, I work at MongoDB as a Curriculum and Software Engineer. Bard is my alma mater and C.A.M.P. has been keeping me connected to it for the past several years. It reminds me and emphasizes how Bard really is “a place to think”. In my free time, I like kick-boxing, volunteering for the circus, doing saw work, and dancing.

My name is Sally (she/her/hers), and I’m an early educator currently teaching at Livingston Street Early Childhood Community in Kingston. I graduated from Bard in 2015 as an Art History major and participate in continuing education through the Early Childhood Institute of the Hudson River Valley and the Hudson Valley Writing Project. Although I am best versed in early childhood education, I have worked with children of all ages, including leading a Painting Workshop for elementary-aged children this past spring. I believe in the importance of interdisciplinary learning, work to incorporate mathematics and the arts into my daily teaching practice, and am excited to return to CAMP for my second year of teaching our Art and Math course.

My name is Mehreen Kabir (she/her/hers). I will be acting as a Junior Staff TA this summer. I will be a senior Mathematics major at Bard this fall and a junior camp counselor this summer! I am involved with STEM outreach, where I teach middle school students to use math and science in real-world problems. I also co-lead a TLS project called the Girls Math Club, with former Program Coordinator Maya Schwartz, and Riti Bahl. Besides solving sudoku puzzles, my hobbies include painting, biking, and meditating.

Hello everyone! My name is Michael Ventoso (he/him/his) and I am a TA/Counselor for this summer’s CAMP. Here at Bard, I am entering my fifth year and currently working on a pair of senior projects aimed at bridging the gap between computer science and music. Having spent several summers as an instructor at music camps back home in New Jersey, being a member of CAMP seemed like the perfect opportunity for me to continue sharing the things I am passionate about with the next generation of thinkers and do-ers. When I am not coding or performing, you can find me reading novels, playing board games, and cooking (delicious) Italian food.

My name is Olivia Witanowska and I use the pronouns she/her/hers. This is my first summer joining the CAMP as a TA/counselor. I am a junior and I am majoring in Computer Science. I chose to become a part of CAMP because I want to not only be able to share my appreciation for the field, but also help other students discover their appreciation, as well. Other than Computer Science, some of my other hobbies are solving puzzles, drawing, and photography.

My name is Shuang Cai. I also go by Chelsea (she/her/hers). I will be a Junior Staff TA this summer. Originally, I am from China. I’m a rising junior here at Bard studying computer science and studio art. I enjoy running and basketball. I actually started playing soccer this summer. In the future, I want to make my own computer games using my coding skills and artistic value. This is my second year working for CAMP. Let’s have some fun with Math!

My name is Tsitsi Mambo and my pronouns are she/her/hers. I will be acting as a Junior Staff TA this summer. I am entering my sophomore year at Bard College and my intended major is Computer Science. I decided to join Math Camp this year because I hope to gain more experience in helping children with understanding math and deepening their love for the subject as much as I have. I enjoy playing volleyball and hiking in my free time and I love discovering new places to visit to read a good book.

Hi I’m Anna Khakhalina and I go by she/her/hers pronouns. I went to CAMP for several years and I’m excited to see what experience helping out as a counselor will bring! I’m going into the tenth grade in Red Hook High School. CAMP is a favorite of mine as I like to solve and work out problems. I also really enjoy mathematics and programming. One of my hobbies is robotics, as I am on a First Tech Challenge robotics team for my high school. I can’t wait for CAMP 2019!

Hi, I’m Keshav Ramji (he/him/his). I will be acting as a Junior Staff TA this summer. I am very excited to be part of the CAMP staff! I am a rising junior at Arlington High School in Lagrangeville, New York. I have been involved with the Bard Math Circle since taking the AMC exams in 6th grade. I enjoy problem solving and teaching math as well. Some of my hobbies are playing tennis, badminton and traveling. I also like sports analytics, bracket challenges and logic puzzles.

My name is Sasha Fraser (she/her/hers) and I have been a part of CAMP since the first summer it was held. I was a CAMPer for the first three years, and a high school volunteer for the last two summers. I am homeschooled, and I will be a senior this coming school year. Some of my hobbies are ballet and photography. I find applied math especially interesting, and I always learn something new every year during the classes. I’m excited to be a part of camp again this year!
